APPLE'S IPHONE IS CALLING
The iPhone is a success by any real measure. The iPhone is one of the most heavily promoted items in history. Apple's iPhone is more than just the hottest gadget of the summer - it's an indicator of internet freedom. The iPhone costs as much as a cheap PC: The high-end iPhone is $600, though analysts say a smaller, cheaper version of the iPhone is on the way.
The Apple iPhone is big technology in a little package. An iPhone is a small Apple computer, a cellular phone and an iPod in one sleek little unit. The iPhone is a combination of a mobile phone and small wireless PC with some basic functionality. However, an iPhone is an embedded device, not a general-purpose computer. Similarly, the iPhone is not the first mobile phone to incorporate a music-player, web browser or e-mail software. The UI on the iPhone is innovative, visually stunning, and incredibly responsive. And, once you get used to the virtual keyboard, the iPhone is the Sony PSP of mobility and productivity.
The iPhone is obviously cutting edge as a phone. Just remember, the iPhone is not a smart phone. Industry experts have warned that Apple's iPhone is "no smartphone" and is not as technologically advanced as many reports would suggest. Making a call with iPhone is as simple as tapping a name. But one notable feature the iPhone is missing is voice dialing.
The iPhone is not just a phone, but a mobile Internet device. The Iphone is an excellent media player. Another feature provided by the iPhone is the ability to play videos from anywhere in the world. The sensors that discern which way the iPhone is oriented are very cool. It automaically changes the screen view from horizontal to vertical, and vice-versa. That might not be new, but the ease with which this is accomplished makes it easy to see why iPhone is so revolutionary. The iPhone is one of the coolest pieces of geek tech to arrive on this planet this decade. The iPhone is exclusive to AT&T/Cingular, which means it's a SIM-based GSM phone. The only carrier you can use with an iPhone is AT&T. Of course, the obvious irony is that despite seemingly low sales, the iPhone is still a tremendously popular product.
The iPhone is a fantastic device, but is it right for you or your business. The common wisdom is that the iPhone is a consumer play and Apple doesn't particularly care about business users. While some have been ringing the warning bell that the iPhone is not suitable for the enterprise, one analyst says those concerns have been overblown.
ACCESSORIES
New iPhone accessories are hitting the market, and you are probably trying to figure out which iPhone accessories you should consider buying. One of the most critical iPhone accessories will be a case or screen protector. The antibacterial iSkin Revo case for the iPhone is due out this month with a price of $39. There's the Apple iPhone Bluetooth Headset, Travel Charger, and Custom Ringtones for your Apple iPhone.
The race to offer iPhone accessories is just starting, with Belkin off to a fast start with cases, cables, and an armband. Belkin, being a long time iPod accessory maker, decided to give the public a glimpse of it's first wave of iPhone accessories in the form of a slim-fit case, an acrylic case, an armband, and a headphone adapter. The latest company that announced its iPhone accessories is BoxWave. BoxWave Apple iPhone Accessories: FlexiSkin Skin Case is cool. Speck Products, well known for their quality Apple accessories, have already released two iPhone accessories, and coming soon is yet another one. But...
The company with the inside track on getting iPhone accessories out the door may be the maker of the iPhone itself. Apple has announced a number of official iPhone accessories. Apple iPhone accessories include stereo headphones, headphones with built-in microphone, Bluetooth headset, all kinds of GPS Navigation, LCD Photo Frame, and more. Apple has added a new page dedicated to iPhone accessories. The sale of iPhone accessories is expected to become a significant chunk of these companies' profits this year.
IPHONE PROBLEMS : SPEED + ACTIVATION
Minor iPhone problems are already cropping up. There does not seem to be a lot of actual iPhone problems, but rather a slew of problems based on AT&T not being ready for the amount of activations. Our local paper had an article on current Iphone problems and one of them is the network not being able to handle all of the new users. AT&T says most iPhone problems have been solved. Macworld's Dan Frakes compared the initial iPhone problems with those of another revolutionary Apple product, the iPod, in its early days. Yet tales of iPhone problems, like frequent crashes, may turn Apple's hope into another Newton (the 1993 PDA flop), and it's rumored AT&T might Block YouTube. Some complain about font size and keyboard on the handset.
Outside of billing issues, Apple handles all iPhone problems. Apple has clearly thought about this, because Apple store staff will also be trained to troubleshoot iPhone problems, including Cingular network issues. Because Apple's technical support call center located in Canada, employees need to be trained how to use and troubleshoot any iPhone problems.
SO WHATS IT ALL ABOUT, IPHONE?
The iPhone is not about new features, it is about how the features work. Hardware: The iPhone is simply beautiful. The iPhone is elegant. The iPhone is also an iPod. The iPhone is the first iPod with a speaker. Unlike earlier iPods, the iPhone is a full software platform demanding support for applications Symbian does not address. Not only that, but the iPhone is locked to one service provider which allows Apple to have a monopoly on the service plans.
While a regualr computer does your heavy lifting, the iPhone is there to retrieve, read, and add short bursts of information when one is mobile. Few of us want to read digital books all the way through on our handheld, but the iPhone is a bookshop window with an infinite catalogue. Yet, for me, the difference in current Windows Mobile devices and the new iPhone is just about eye candy. In the short term, Iphone is not a threat to Windows Mobile. Therefore we must conclude at this point that, based on our current definition, the iPhone is not a smartphone: it is a very high-end feature phone. And after two hours of seeing it demoed and trying it myself, I have to say that the iPhone is, in my opinion, a category changer. The iPhone is SEXY. The Iphone is an excellent media player. The iPhone is, make no mistake, a wonder of design, functionality and capabilities. I think the iPhone is awesome and a welcome innovation. The bottom line is that the iPhone is a significant leap, and the iPhone redefines the whole concept of coolness when it comes to cell phones.
